We want to share with you some highlights of the heartwarming memorial service held for Miss Peggy Lee on Saturday, February 2. Remembrances from family and friends were combined with magnificent music, creating a true celebration of her extraordinary life.

With more than 450 guests in attendance, the main dining room of the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California was filled to capacity. Officiating at the service was Reverend Mark Vierra of the North Hollywood Church of Religious Science. Among the celebrity guests were k.d. lang, Jack Jones, Andy Williams, Neil Sedaka, Buddy Greco, Kay Starr, Steve Lawrence, Benny Carter, Billy May, Nancy Sinatra, and Dolores Reade (Mrs. Bob) Hope.

A band comprised of some of the top musicians who had played with Peggy performed an outstanding instrumental version of her first hit, “Why Don’t You Do Right?” They also accompanied the two vocalists who lovingly sang some of her songs: Lorraine Feather, daughter of the late famed jazz critic Leonard Feather; and Jolie Jones, daughter of musical legend Quincy Jones. Peggy knew both of these gifted singers all of their lives. Among those offering remembrances were songwriter friends who worked closely with Peggy through the years: Cy Coleman, Johnny Mandel, and, speaking for the team of Leiber and Stoller, Mike Stoller.

After the service, we all adjourned to several large and elegant rooms overflowing with food, flowers, friends, and family. Another fine band played, and everyone told their favorite Peggy Lee stories to one another. The celebration was filled with laughter and fond recollections.
