Peggy sang this dramatic title song over the closing credits of director Nicholas Ray’s odd, engrossing western Johnny Guitar starring Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden and Mercedes McCambridge. She recorded a version for commercial release by Decca Records on March 1, 1954 and performed it on television in May of that year. She recorded the song 35 years later on her Grammy-nominated album The Peggy Lee Songbook: There’ll Be Another Spring. It has also been recorded by Helen Merrill, Milva, Mina, Janet Seidel, Stacy Sullivan, Laura Theodore, Carol Welsman and Kitty White.
