One of Peggy’s finest songs of the 1960s was this ballad she wrote with Johnny Mandel based on a theme from the 1966 comedy The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming. Recorded for Capitol Records on May 21, 1966 with Mandel’s arrangement and Quincy Jones’ musical direction, the song first appeared on her 1967 album Extra Special! Peggy recorded it again in 1989 for her Grammy-nominated album The Peggy Lee Songbook: There’ll Be Another Spring. Other singers who have recorded it include Tony Bennett, Jackie Cain, Jay Clayton, Chris Connor, Meredith D’Ambrosio, Vic Damone, Eileen Farrell, Barbara Fasano, Jack Jones, Irene Kral (on the film’s soundtrack album), Nancy Marano, Carole March, Greta Matassa, Tish Oney, John Proulx, Sue Raney, Kendra Shank, Janis Siegel, Andy Williams and Pinky Winters.
