New Decade, New Directions
The early 1950s brought many changes to Peggy both personally and professionally. In early 1951 she and Dave Barbour divorced, and around the same time she moved to New York to perform regularly on TV's Top Tunes (co-hosting with Mel Tormé) and Songs for Sale. She also began hosting her own CBS radio series, The Peggy Lee Show. By spring of 1952 she had a new record label, having moved from Capitol Records to Decca Records. Later in the year she returned to California to take on her first starring role in a feature film. She began working with new songwriting partners, including some of the most respected composers in the music business. She also began writing both lyrics and music for several songs, long before the “singer-songwriter era” in popular music.
